What is a reactive power penalty?
Electric motors, transformers, ballasts and similar inductive loads draw reactive power to build a magnetic field, alongside the active power that does the actual work. This reactive power burdens the grid unnecessarily. To limit it, distribution companies compare your reactive consumption against your active consumption and, if you exceed a threshold, add a reactive penalty to your bill. For industrial and commercial facilities above 30 kVA installed power, this is a line item that grows unnoticed.
Inductive and capacitive limits: 20% and 15%
There are two separate limits. Inductive reactive consumption may not exceed 20% of active energy — the most commonly exceeded limit in motor- and transformer-heavy facilities. Capacitive reactive consumption may not exceed 15% of active energy — usually caused by oversized compensation capacitors, or capacitors left engaged when load drops at night or on weekends. The essence is to stay balanced between the two: too little compensation and you hit the inductive penalty, too much and you fall into the capacitive one.
How is the penalty calculated?
The math is simple. Your inductive ratio is inductive reactive energy (kVArh) divided by active energy (kWh). Say you consumed 120,000 kWh of active energy in a month and drew 28,000 kVArh of inductive reactive. Inductive ratio = 28,000 / 120,000 = 23.3%. That is above the 20% limit; the difference is penalized. The limit corresponds to 120,000 × 0.20 = 24,000 kVArh, so the excess is 28,000 − 24,000 = 4,000 kVArh. How do you reduce the penalty?
The answer to inductive penalties is compensation: a capacitor bank sized to the load profile supplies reactive power locally instead of from the grid, pulling the ratio below 20%. But even with a panel, capacitor health is critical; capacitors that lose capacity over time stop protecting you. For capacitive penalties, the reactive relay must disengage steps under low load. In high-harmonic (THD) environments, a detuned (filtered) system is needed instead of plain capacitors. The key point: these values change over time as machines are added and capacitors age. Without continuous monitoring you only notice the penalty when the invoice arrives — too late.
