What is Transformer Load?
The ratio of the load a power transformer carries at a given moment to its rated capacity.
Transformer load is the ratio of the load a power transformer carries at a given moment to the transformer's rated (nameplate) capacity, usually expressed as a percentage. For example, if a 1,000 kVA transformer carries an 800 kVA load, the transformer load is 80%. This ratio shows how fully the transformer is running.
Excessive transformer load carries serious risks: heating of the transformer, rapid aging of the insulation, reduced efficiency and, in the worst case, failure. A transformer continuously carrying above 80% load can exceed its capacity during sudden demand spikes. On the other hand, very low load is also inefficient — a transformer produces losses even when idle.
Monitoring transformer load continuously with an energy analyzer allows both early detection of overload risk and capacity planning. Knowing the load profile is the basis for assessing whether the transformer is sufficient when adding new equipment or increasing production.
