What is Capacitor Step?
A capacitor group in a compensation panel that can be switched in and out independently.
A step is a capacitor group in a compensation panel that can be independently switched in and out by the reactive power relay. A panel typically consists of several steps (for example a 12-step panel). This allows compensation to be adjusted incrementally to the facility's changing load.
The reactive power relay measures the instantaneous reactive demand and engages the required number of steps. At low load, few steps are active; at high load, many. The number of steps and the kVAr value of each are sized according to the facility's load profile. A stepped structure, rather than one large capacitor, prevents over-compensation (capacitive penalty) at low load.
Step health is critical: if a step's capacitor loses capacity over time or its contactor fails, that step produces insufficient reactive power even when engaged and becomes a hidden penalty source. SolarTools monitors whether each step engages and its real contribution, detecting the faulty step.
